Nitrogen fixers in NZ food forests
How to use nitrogen-fixing nurse plants in Aotearoa without overstating what they do or letting them become competitors.

Nitrogen fixers are useful, not magical
Nitrogen-fixing plants form relationships with microbes that can convert atmospheric nitrogen into plant-available forms within their own tissues and surrounding soil processes. In food forests they are often used as nurse plants, shelter, biomass sources and soil builders.
The overstatement is that simply planting a nitrogen fixer automatically feeds every nearby fruit tree. Reality is more conditional. Species, soil, microbial partners, cutting, root turnover, climate and management all affect the result.
Choose climate-appropriate fixers
This site currently profiles two key nitrogen-fixing support plants: pigeon pea and tagasaste. They suit different roles.
Pigeon pea is a warm-climate shrub for Northland, Auckland and Bay of Plenty pockets. It can grow quickly through warm seasons, provide soft biomass and nurse young avocado, citrus or banana plantings. Frost can kill or severely damage it, so in cooler places treat it as a summer experiment rather than a reliable perennial.
Tagasaste is tougher in many temperate districts and useful for shelter, fodder contexts, biomass and nurse functions. It can also outgrow its role, self-seed in some areas and shade fruiting plants if unmanaged.
Use fixers as nurses
Nurse plants protect or support slower permanent plants during establishment. A pigeon pea nurse guild may help a young avocado or citrus in warm sites. A tagasaste nurse guild may shelter a feijoa edge or orchard conversion while permanent structure develops.
The key word is nurse. Nurses do not stay in charge forever. Write a reduction plan when planting. Chop, side-prune, coppice or remove before they dominate light and roots.
Return biomass to the system
Nitrogen in leaves and stems helps the food forest only if biomass is cycled. Cut leafy growth and return it as mulch away from trunks. Let roots turn over. Avoid exporting every pruning off site unless disease or access requires it.
Pair nitrogen fixers with chop-and-drop practice and building fertility without synthetic fertiliser. The fertility value is in the cycle, not just the plant label.
Avoid competition
A nitrogen fixer can still steal water, light and space. Tagasaste left too long can shade feijoa or young orchard trees. Pigeon pea planted against an avocado trunk can compete and reduce airflow. Fast growth is useful only when directed.
Place nurse plants on the sunny or windward flank, not in the trunk collar. Keep access for chopping. Thin before fruiting wood is shaded.
Soil biology and inoculation
Nitrogen fixation depends on compatible microbes. Some soils already contain suitable partners; others may not. Inoculation may be useful for some legumes, but availability and species specificity vary. This guide does not promise fixation rates. If nitrogen performance matters commercially or scientifically, seek local agronomic advice.
For home food forests, observe plant vigour and biomass. A healthy fast-growing nurse that is regularly cut and returned is doing practical work even if exact nitrogen numbers are unknown.
Regional cautions
Warm subtropical sites can use pigeon pea more confidently, though frost pockets still matter. Temperate and cool sites usually rely more on tagasaste or other hardy options as profiles expand. Wind-exposed sites may need permanent shelter species as well as nitrogen fixers; do not make a short-lived nurse carry a storm job alone.
In some districts, self-seeding or weed risk should be monitored. Pull volunteers early if a support plant spreads beyond its intended role.
Combine with non-fixing fertility plants
Nitrogen fixers are only one part of fertility. Comfrey does not fix nitrogen, but it produces mulch biomass and supports pollinators. Groundcovers protect soil. Compost adds organic matter. Leaf litter feeds decomposers. A balanced food forest uses several fertility pathways.
A practical placement example
In a warm avocado guild, plant avocado on free drainage. Place pigeon pea on the sunny windward side where it can be chopped. Put comfrey at the drip line. Keep nasturtium as living mulch. Remove pigeon pea as the avocado canopy expands.
In a temperate boundary guild, plant feijoa as the permanent fruiting hedge. Use tagasaste as temporary shelter on the windward side. Reduce tagasaste as feijoa thickens.
Signs a nitrogen fixer is no longer helping
A nurse plant has outlived its role when it shades fruiting wood, blocks access, dries the root zone, seeds beyond the bed, or absorbs pruning time that should go to the main crop. Nitrogen fixation does not excuse poor behaviour. If the permanent food forest is ready, reduce the nurse and return clean biomass as mulch.
On the other hand, if a young site is still windy, exposed and low in organic matter, removing every nurse at once can shock the planting. Stage reductions and watch the crop response.
Keep the best nurse material cycling through the garden. A removed nitrogen fixer can still serve as mulch, compost feed or rough edge material if it is clean and placed thoughtfully.
