Building fertility without synthetic fertiliser
A practical NZ guide to mulch, compost, living roots, nitrogen fixers and chop-and-drop, with honest limits around nutrient claims.

Fertility is a cycle, not a product shelf
Food forests aim to grow fertility by keeping soil covered, feeding soil life, recycling biomass and maintaining living roots. That does not mean outside inputs are never needed. Many suburban soils begin compacted, depleted, dry, buried under lawn or contaminated by past use. Establishment may require compost, mulch, minerals or professional soil advice.
The difference is the direction of travel. A food forest should become better at cycling its own organic matter over time.
Keep soil covered
Bare soil loses moisture, biology and structure. Mulch is the first fertility tool. Clean woodchip, leaves, compost, chop-and-drop material and living groundcovers protect the surface while roots establish. See mulch and paths for establishment details.
Living cover matters too. Nasturtium can cover open soil seasonally. Low herbs and groundcovers reduce splash and weed pressure. Keep collars clear around trunks so soil cover does not become bark rot.
Compost wisely
Compost adds stable organic matter and biology. Use it in planting pockets, around hungry trees, and as a top-dressed ingredient under mulch. Avoid putting uncomposted manures or questionable materials directly on edible beds. Follow local food-safety guidance for manures and community gardens.
Compost is not magic if drainage, pH, compaction or water are wrong. If a plant repeatedly shows deficiency symptoms, investigate the cause rather than adding random inputs.
Grow biomass
Comfrey is a classic biomass plant because it produces large leaves that can be cut and returned as mulch. It also feeds bees when allowed to flower. Place it at drip lines, path edges or dedicated comfrey fertility strip positions, not against trunks.
Banana leaves can provide huge biomass in warm frost-managed gardens. Tagasaste and pigeon pea can be chopped as nurse plants. Feijoa prunings can be chipped or used carefully as rough mulch once woody material is managed appropriately.
Nitrogen fixers are helpers, not miracles
Nitrogen-fixing plants work with microbes to convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms in plant tissues and soil systems. They can be very useful, especially in establishment years, but they do not automatically feed neighbouring trees on demand.
Pigeon pea is a warm-climate nurse and biomass shrub. Tagasaste is a tougher nurse and shelter plant in many temperate districts. Both need management. Read nitrogen fixers in NZ before assuming a nitrogen fixer solves poor soil.
Chop-and-drop timing
Chop-and-drop works when biomass is cut before it becomes overly woody or competitive, then placed where mulch is needed. Cut soft material, drop it under trees away from trunks, and let soil life process it. For cleaner paths or visible public gardens, wilt or chop material smaller before placing.

Living roots feed soil life
Plants feed soil organisms through root exudates and decaying roots. A food forest should avoid long periods of bare, dead soil. Perennial herbs, shrubs, groundcovers and seasonal plants all contribute. This is one reason staged understorey planting matters after trees are established and mulched.
However, living roots also compete. Dense understorey around a young tree can steal moisture and light. Fertility design is about managed diversity, not maximum root density at all times.
Mineral claims need care
Dynamic accumulator claims are often repeated with more confidence than evidence. Comfrey, for example, is clearly useful as biomass and soil cover, but exact nutrient transfer depends on soil, plant tissue, cutting timing and site conditions. Treat traditional claims as prompts for observation, not guaranteed fertiliser analysis.
If you suspect serious mineral imbalance, use soil tests and local expertise. Organic gardening is not an excuse to ignore measurement.
Avoid contaminated inputs
Food gardens deserve clean inputs. Be cautious with municipal mulch, manure, lawn clippings, straw, roadside material and demolition waste. Persistent herbicides can damage broadleaf plants. Treated timber and contaminated soil are not suitable fertility sources.
Community gardens should document input sources so future growers know what has been applied.
Connect fertility to design
Fertility is easiest when designed into patterns. The existing orchard conversion pattern turns mown orchards into mulched living systems. Annual fertility review
Once a year, review fertility as a whole system. Are leaves smaller than expected? Is mulch disappearing quickly? Are worms and fungal threads visible under woodchip? Is water moving through soil or running off? Are support plants producing enough biomass, or are they competing without being cut?
Use that review to choose one action: more mulch, better compost, a soil test, more chop-and-drop plants, or less competition around young trees. Avoid changing everything at once, because then you cannot tell what helped.
