Pests: observation, not panic
A calm food forest pest approach: identify, observe patterns, improve plant health and intervene proportionately without making medical or miracle claims.

Not every insect is a problem
Food forests are living systems, so insects, mites, fungi, birds, slugs and mammals will appear. Some are pests. Some are predators. Some are pollinators. Some are decomposers. Some are only noticeable because the garden is being watched closely for the first time.
The best first response is observation, not panic.
Identify before acting
Look carefully. Which plant is affected? Which part: new leaves, old leaves, fruit, roots, bark or flowers? Are insects present, or only damage? Is the problem spreading? Are predators also present? Is the plant otherwise vigorous?
Take photos, compare with local horticultural resources, and ask experienced growers if needed. Avoid applying home remedies or broad sprays to unidentified problems. You may kill beneficial insects and leave the underlying stress untouched.
Plant stress invites pests
Pest outbreaks often follow stress: drought, waterlogging, wind damage, frost, nutrient imbalance, soft overgrowth, poor airflow or overcrowding. A lemon in a wind tunnel may attract scale because it is struggling. A dense citrus understorey may trap humidity. A young tree buried in mulch against its trunk may decline and invite secondary problems.
Before treating pests, check basics: water, drainage, mulch collars, light, airflow and root competition. Read pruning for light and water and drainage if problems repeat.
Diversity helps, but does not guarantee balance
Diverse plantings can support predators, pollinators and habitat. Comfrey flowers feed bees. Nasturtium can attract insects and act as living cover. Mixed edges like the suburban mixed fruit guild avoid single-crop simplicity.
But diversity is not a force field. Citrus pests still happen in guilds. Birds still eat fruit. Slugs still hide in mulch. Food forest design reduces some risks and increases observation opportunities; it does not remove management.
Set thresholds
Decide what level of damage matters. A few chewed leaves on a vigorous feijoa may be irrelevant. Scale covering a young mandarin may need action. Slugs eating every new seedling need management. Birds taking the first ripe fruit may require netting or harvest timing.
Thresholds prevent overreaction. They also prevent neglect. Calm observation is not the same as doing nothing forever.
Use low-risk interventions first
Start with cultural and mechanical actions: prune for airflow, remove heavily infested leaves where appropriate, wash pests off, improve watering, clear trunk collars, protect seedlings, use physical barriers, harvest promptly, and remove fallen fruit that attracts wasps.
If a product is needed, choose one appropriate to the pest, crop and local rules. Follow labels. Be cautious with homemade sprays. Natural does not automatically mean safe for plants, people, pets, waterways or beneficial insects.
Special care in shared gardens
Schools, marae and community gardens need clear pest policies. Children may harvest directly. Volunteers may apply the wrong remedy if instructions are vague. Keep sprays, even organic ones, documented and controlled. Prefer design, pruning, hygiene and physical protection where possible.

Pest habitat versus beneficial habitat
Mulch and dense planting can shelter both pests and beneficial organisms. That is normal. The solution is not bare soil. It is managed structure: clear collars, visible trunks, diverse flowers, open paths, and enough airflow.
If slugs are severe in a wet mulch zone, adjust planting timing, traps, ducks where appropriate, barriers or mulch placement. If birds damage fruit, net carefully and safely, avoiding wildlife entanglement.

Keep records
Write down pest timing. Citrus scale in late summer, slug damage after wet mulch, bird pressure at ripening, aphids on soft spring growth: patterns help you plan next season. Records turn surprise into management.
A calm inspection routine
Choose a regular inspection loop rather than waiting for crisis. Look at new growth, old leaves, undersides, branch forks, fruit clusters, mulch collars and soil moisture. Check whether beneficial insects are present before acting. Photograph uncertain problems from the same distance each week so you can see whether they are spreading or stabilising.
For citrus, include the trunk, leaf undersides and sticky leaves in the routine. For feijoa, check fruit drop and branch density. For young plants, check whether damage is pest pressure or simply drought, wind and competition.
If you do intervene, record what you did and what changed. A response that works once may become part of the garden rhythm; a response that changes nothing should not become habit simply because it felt active, tidy or reassuring at the time in the moment that day.
