Food forest planning can become vague quickly: many layers, many species, many guilds and many possible layouts. Free tools help turn that energy into visible decisions. Start with your site notes

Before opening any tool, read how to assess your site. Mark sun, wind, frost, water, slope, access and existing plants. A tool is only as good as the assumptions you feed it. If you enter a banana circle into a frost hollow, the output may look tidy while the planting still fails.

Use the tools to ask "what happens if?" What happens if the feijoa hedge is planted at two metre spacing? What happens if an avocado canopy spreads eight metres? What happens if the path needs to remain wheelbarrow width? What happens if the banana circle must stay a contained biomass pocket rather than expanding into the whole lawn?

Plan layers visually

For example, a subtropical avocado guild needs room for avocado, temporary pigeon pea, comfrey at the drip line, groundcover and a separate moist niche if taro is included. A suburban mixed fruit guild may need far less height and can fit a typical home section more safely.

Compare patterns

Use tools alongside the site patterns. A small suburban food forest has different spacing logic from a subtropical slope or banana circle biomass pocket. The tool helps visualise, but the pattern explains why the layout works.

Do not force a favourite guild into the wrong pattern. If the site is frosty, compare with frost-prone productive garden. If the site is a narrow edge, use narrow boundary planting.

Use tools for staging

A food forest is not installed all at once. Use planning tools to imagine year one, year three and year five. Where does shelter go first? Which plants are temporary nurses? Where will mulch be delivered? Which path must stay open? What can wait until the site has proven itself?

Then read planting sequence years 1 to 3. Tools are especially useful for spotting when a year-one plant will become a year-five problem.

Planning is more than placing species icons. Each plant needs a role. Feijoa may be a boundary fruiting shrub. Comfrey may be a cuttable mulch strip. Lemon may be everyday kai in the warmest pocket. Taro may belong only in a damp warm niche. Banana may be biomass first and fruit second.

If you cannot name the role, do not plant it yet.

Keep uncertainty visible

Use notes such as "trial", "needs frost proof", "remove in year three", "to confirm drainage" and "neighbour discussion required". Good planning tools should make uncertainty explicit. That is better than a polished plan built on untested claims.

A tool-based planning workflow

Work in passes. First pass: mark fixed constraints such as buildings, paths, services and boundaries. Second pass: place shelter and access. Third pass: place long-lived fruiting structure. Fourth pass: add support plants, mulch zones and experimental pockets. Final pass: remove one third of the plants you added in excitement and check whether the design still works.

That last pass is valuable. Food forest plans often improve when simplified. If a plant has no role, no maintenance plan or no proven climate fit, leave it off the first stage.

Use the plan as a living document. After each season, update it with what survived, what needed too much water, where people actually walked, and which harvests mattered. The revised plan is more valuable than the original because it contains evidence.

For community and school gardens, a visual plan helps groups agree on paths, watering, harvest rules and maintenance. For home gardens, it helps family members understand why the lawn is not all disappearing at once. For neighbours, it can show mature height and boundary intent before conflict starts.

Do one reality check on site

After making a tool plan, walk the garden with the plan in hand. Stand where each tree would go and imagine it at mature width. Carry a barrow through the proposed paths. Hold a hose to the farthest bed. Look from the neighbour side if the boundary is affected. This physical check catches mistakes a screen cannot show.

Then revise the plan before buying plants. A slower plan that fits the site is faster than replacing trees later.
