Banana circle guild

A moisture-focused planting pattern using banana as the biomass engine, with taro, comfrey and groundcovers in a circular or horseshoe moist hollow.

Labour

High: digging, mulching, sucker thinning, frost protection. Fruiting is bonus — design for biomass first or you will be disappointed.

Site conditions

Warm, frost-managed site. A dug basin or natural damp hollow helps. Needs organic matter and regular moisture. Strong wind will shred leaves.

Water

Designed as a moisture sink with overflow — not a stagnant pond. Keep banana roots on the raised rim; taro toward damper centre. Never put contaminated water into food plantings.

Spacing

Circles often 2–3 m across for home gardens; scale to available moisture and labour.

Establishment sequence

  1. Dig a circular basin or horseshoe, piling soil into a surrounding mound.
  2. Plant bananas on the mound rim.
  3. Enrich the basin with compost and plant taro in the damper centre/side.
  4. Place comfrey on the outer soil ring.
  5. Mulch heavily; add optional pigeon pea on the sunniest rim.

Ongoing management

  1. Thin banana suckers to productive stems.
  2. Chop leaves for mulch; keep basin organic matter topped up.
  3. Protect from frost events with covers or accept seasonal die-back.
  4. Check overflow paths after heavy rain.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting reliable fruit outside proven warm pockets
  • Flooding the basin with no overflow
  • Putting banana in the wettest centre
  • Directing unsuitable wastewater into edible plantings

Limitations and risks

  • Fruiting is not guaranteed outside proven warm microclimates.
  • Standing water without overflow can sour soils — design drainage.
  • Do not direct contaminated water into food plantings.

The idea

A banana circle is a moisture and biomass pocket, not a tropical holiday. In Aotearoa it belongs only where bananas already survive winters with acceptable drama.

Rim vs basin

  • Rim (mound): bananas, optional pigeon pea

Greywater caution

Only use greywater systems that are legal, well designed and appropriate for edible plantings. When unsure, use clean water and rain.
