Common food forest failures
The recurring reasons NZ food forests fail: wrong plant, wrong place, no shelter, poor drainage, crowding, weak access and unrealistic labour.

Failure is usually patterned
Food forest failures can feel personal, but most are common patterns. The plant was wrong for the site. Wind was ignored. Frost pooled in a hollow. Drainage was poor. Too many trees were planted. Paths disappeared. Labour was underestimated. Mulch touched trunks. Nurse plants were never reduced.
Learning these patterns early saves years.
Failure 1: copying the wrong climate
A Bay of Plenty or Northland species list does not belong everywhere. Avocado, banana, taro and pigeon pea all have strong climate limits. They may be brilliant in the right warm microclimate and expensive compost in a frosty hollow.
If your site is cold, use cool-climate food forests and frost-prone productive garden. A successful cool food forest is better than a subtropical graveyard.
Failure 2: no shelter
Wind damage is often blamed on "weak plants". In reality the site was too exposed. Leaves shred, roots rock, flowers drop and soil dries. Tender species need shelter before they need companions.
Use wind and shelter for food forests and the windbreak shelter edge pattern. Plant shelter first, then the precious fruit tree.
Failure 3: wet feet and drainage mistakes
Water harvesting can become waterlogging. Avocado in a wet basin, citrus in compacted clay, banana in stagnant sludge, or mulch piled against bark are all avoidable failures. Plants need moisture and air.
Read water and drainage. Separate wet-niche plants from drainage-sensitive trees. The taro moist niche guild works because it respects different water needs.
Failure 4: too much canopy
New gardens look empty, so people overplant trees. Five years later the food forest is dark, damp and hard to harvest. Groundcovers disappear, fruiting wood shades out, and pruning becomes a rescue job.
Use choosing a canopy tree and pruning for light before planting. In small gardens, one canopy or no canopy may be correct.
Failure 5: support plants become competitors
Support plants are useful only when managed. Comfrey should be cut and placed where roots are welcome. Tagasaste should nurse, then step back. Pigeon pea should be chopped before it becomes a woody thicket. Nasturtium should cover soil, not smother seedlings.

Failure 6: no paths or access
If you cannot reach fruit, prune branches, inspect pests or carry mulch, maintenance collapses. Paths must exist before plants fill the space. This is especially important for schools, marae and community gardens where many people need to understand the layout.

Failure 7: panic pest control
Not every insect is a crisis. Panic sprays can remove beneficial insects and hide the real issue, such as stressed plants, poor airflow or over-soft growth. Observe first. Identify patterns. Improve plant health and habitat before escalating.
Read pests: observation, not panic.
Failure 8: unrealistic labour
Food forests often reduce some maintenance over time, but establishment is work. Mulch, watering, pruning, chopping, thinning and harvest all take time. A household, school or community group must design to its real capacity.
Start smaller. Complete one zone. Let it become boringly successful. Then expand.
A recovery process
If your food forest is struggling, pause planting. Map the site again. Identify the main constraint: wind, frost, water, light, access, soil, pests or labour. Fix the constraint before adding species.
Diagnostic questions
Ask the questions in order. Is the plant suited to this climate? Is it in the right microclimate? Does water drain or remain available as needed? Is wind damage obvious? Is the trunk collar clear? Is the plant getting enough light? Can people reach it? Has a support plant become a competitor? Has the site been expanded faster than mulch and water can support?
Write the answer beside each struggling plant. Patterns will appear. If every failure sits in the same cold corner, stop replacing plants there with tender species. If every young tree has grass at its base, solve mulch and weeding. If citrus fails only on the exposed side, build shelter before buying another tree.
Replace with humility
Replacement is not defeat. Sometimes the best recovery is removing a fantasy plant and replacing it with a reliable one. A feijoa hedge that fruits every autumn may serve a household better than a frost-bitten avocado that absorbs years of protection. A comfrey strip that feeds mulch may be more valuable than a rare understorey plant nobody can identify.
Keep one or two experiments if they bring joy, but do not let experiments carry the main food resilience job.
For community projects, discuss failures publicly and kindly. A dead tree can teach drainage, watering rosters or species choice if the lesson is recorded. Silent replacement hides the pattern and wastes the next volunteer's effort, budget and learning opportunity.
