Blueberry forms a productive shrub layer on acid soils. Pair with strawberry groundcover and light insectary herbs; keep lime-loving companions away from the root zone.

Establishment

Plant into acidic soil or raised beds in autumn or spring. Mulch thickly. Water evenly. Net before fruit colours. Plant two or more cultivars for pollination.

NZ honesty

Climate range is wide; soil chemistry is the honesty test. Alkaline or limed gardens fail blueberries regardless of region labels.

Cautions: Birds will strip crops without netting. Wrong pH causes chlorosis and poor growth.
